Big thanks to everyone who voted for us in the Burnaby Newsleader's annual competition.

Small Paws Doggie Daycare (http://www.smallpaws.ca/) has won BEST Dog Daycare and BEST Groomer in Burnaby! We have taken the best dog daycare title a couple years in a row now, and were also named the best dog daycare in the Burnaby Now's annual competition in 2010 and 2011.

Our tails are wagging like crazy today, so thanks again.

(So yes, just as a pleasant reminder, we have, indeed, reached our four hundredth and ninety-ninth blog posting today - please, hold your applause - and we will be transitioning to our facebook page after our FIVE HUNDREDTH blog posting. And in case you were wondering, time does fly when you're having fun ;)

Ahoy there, my landlubbing lovers of canines and canine-related correspondence. So, I was chatting with a darling friend of mine, who confessed - whispered, really - over the phone that she and her fine Airedale (who shall remain nameless, per her request) were ridden with FLEAS!

"Fleas!" She said, wailing. "We're neat people - we donate to charity! We don't deserve it! Not us!"

I assuaged her suffering, but I had to point out - gently - that the presence of fleas has nothing to do with karmic counts or domestic neatness, but ensuring that your beloved pooch is protected, particularly during the months of April to November. A great product to use is Advantage (which just protects against fleas, and is available without a prescription). Of course, if you'd like protection against other parasites (internal, for example), Advantage Multi, Revolution, or Sentinel are other great options. These products are available only through your veterinary clinic.

Anyhoo, just thought I'd toss in my two cents. Onwards to pictures of preening and posing puppies!

Greetings and salutations canine-loving compatriots. It's a sobering, misty day in Vancouver, but I have no qualms; your Dog Blogger #2 was afflicted with a sunburn this past long weekend.

Did you know that dogs can be prone to sunburn? They most assuredly can be, so owners of recently-shaved dogs; short-coated pooches; and wispy-feathered pups should do their utmost to ensure their dogs are adequately protected from the glare of the unforgiving sun.

It was a cozy day at daycare, and we welcomed Milhouse, a feisty and fun-loving Mini Schnauzer to the gang today. He was devotedly followed by Barney, and was quite enamoured with Rosie, I thought.

Post-Holiday Assessments

...Aaaand a glorious good morning to you, my internet denizens. I hope you all had stellar long weekends. Your very own Dog Blogger #2 went mountaintop camping, and to her astonishment, was surrounded by metres of snow. Also marmots, which are now my new favourite animal.

On a more sombre note, there was an entirely preventable incident over the weekend, wherein a wee puppy died after being left in a car. I know that none of our clients would ever do that to their own fur babies, but hesitate never to contact the authorities should you witness a similar scenario.

We're down to the last handful of blog posts before we transition to the fb page!

Four Hundred and Ninety. What is the significance behind this seemingly mundane number? It is not, as many of you might think, the amount of cupcakes I've eaten this year (the real figures are probably in the thousands, honestly). It's actually the amount of Small Paws dog blogs we've churned out over the years.

FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY, PEOPLE. No small feat. And it's been quite a ride - a voyage, really. An electronic odyssey from which there is no return. Bechler's face is priceless. Really, you don't even need the glasses for comedic effect, but I thought I'd try it out. He was thoroughly unimpressed, so he was amply rewarded with treats. Also kisses. He didn't like the kisses - he'd scrunch up his face as if I was your Great Aunt Edna. Didn't stop me, mind.

Well, I would wish you all a good and glorious day, but truly, looking outside, it isn't. I will not - nay, I simply canNOT - lie to you, my faithful dog blog followers. The fact of the matter is... well, it's utterly ICKY outside. It's just ... BLEARGH. And because I can't control the weather (...yet! *sinister laugh*), I'll do as the puppies do, and find ways to stay content on such a miserly day. Would you like to see what the dogs did? Well, the puppy-ish playing was out in full force today, and because cameras so rarely come with a "Frenzied Puppies Tearing About a Daycare" setting, all of my pictures of the action were just blurs. Fluffy blurs. Instead, please look to Pepper and see the after-effects of such playing.

...And why should we be? Your local Dog Blogger #2 had an epiphany regarding the sheer awesomeness of Vancouver, brought on by several events: (1) I had a Japadog. If you don't know what this is - you need to find out. If you do know what this is - I now absolutely refuse to go to any BBQ that doesn't have tobiko flakes on their frankfurters; (2) I heard about a study done by a think-tank that declared our city one of the best places to live; and (3) the Canucks punted the Sharks out of the playoffs (there was no other way, Jose). We are awesome. And at Small Paws, we are not without hometown pride - the dogs demonstrated the enviable traits of our oceanside metropolis for y'all.

ps. Canucks will capture the Cup. You heard it here.

We're beautiful. And soulful

Have you seen some of our citizens? They are gorgeous, a la Rose.

Your devoted Dog Blogger #2 is not all lighthearted jocularity and silliness. I have something serious to say. It's serious. I'm serious. Oh, the heavies, the heavies. Brace yourself.

I would like to have a moment of silence. We must commemorate the loss of the Sun - that giant ball of burning gas within our galaxy - because CLEARLY IT HAS DIED AND ABANDONED VANCOUVER FOREVER.

Seriously. What is up with this raaaain? I'm over it. I'm done. Give me sunshine or give me death.

Le sigh.

Moving on: to wrench myself out of this deep pit of climatological despair, I thought I'd focus on the commonalities within our dogs. Between heated sport rivalries and vitriol-laden elections, can't we just focus - for once - on the mutual thread that entwines us all together? What is it that my kindergarten teacher used to say? PLAY NICELY, CHILDREN. That, and she'd plead with us to stop picking our noses. Ah, the joys of children. Stay dry, my friends.

Kaia and Rico Commonality: Puggishness.

...which may or may not be a word, but you know what I mean. Though they're awfully different in their personalities, these two share an ancient lineage in the bold, noble, and snuffly pug.

Maggie & Hugo's Commonality: Terrierdom.

Again, which may or may not be a word, but the stocky, wiry girl on your left and the muscular boy on your right can trace a feisty terrier in their history. Terriers were bred to hunt vermin, which requires a lot of chutzpah, if you ask me.

Pedro & Yogi's Commonality: Foxiness.

...which is definitely a word. Or if it isn't, it should be. From their upright ears to their sharp muzzles, you can't help look at these two and think that they're both channeling Fantastic Mr. Fox in their expressions.

Rose & Max's Commonality: Hunting and Sporting

I know, I know: think of fiercesome predators hunting and sporting for game, and you're not likely to think of Rose, a lithe Italian Greyhoud, and wee Max, who bears an uncanny resemblance to those with poodle genes. But both breeds were used to pursue game, though nowadays, you're more likely to find both breeds doing this: snuggling.

Cody - a Labrador mix - and Marley - a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - have England to thank for their origins. So thank the next Brit you see for contributing to the world of dog fanciers with these two outstanding breeds. You might want to also thank them for Harry Potter, Earl Grey tea, and the Spice Girls. Wait, not the Spice Girls.
